Event Description

This January 24th New Guernica presents the first of its 'The Selectors' club nights, focusing each party on a definitive figure in electronic music. We thought innovative DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall fit this label all too well, and we’re very excited put him in complete control once again.

Weatherall’s biography reads like a history of some of the most pivotal sounds to emanate from early UK club culture and Dance music in general. A figurehead of the early Balearic and Acid house scenes, and the 'Baggy' Ecstasy era, he first started out as a music journalist, launching the seminal Boys Own fanzine (and subsequent label) in 1986 with a group of friends, one of which being a young Terry Farley. After getting his start as a resident DJ at Islington's Shoom club night with Danny Rampling (and later becoming a fixture alongside Paul Oakenfold at Future), he brought a strong DJ sensibility with him when he entered the realm of production in the early 90s.

Andrew’s first studio work was in 1990 alongside Paul Oakenfold on the timeless Hallelujah Club Mix of the Happy Mondays. That same year he followed up with remixes for New Order, My Bloody Valentine, Saint Etienne and The Grid, but it was his re-imagination of Primal Scream's I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have under the title Loaded that led him to help create the hybrid of narcotically challenged Rock and Acid House that is Screamadelica. Now seen as a generation-defining release, the band is still performing it in its entirety today.

Over the past two decades, Weatherall has released a large variety of EPs, LPs & remixes both as solo and collaborative projects. As the Two Lone Swordsmen (with Keith Tenniswood) he has released seven albums primarily on Warp and his own Emissions Audio Output and Rotters Golf Club labels that traverse through IDM, Electro, New Wave and Rockabilly sounds. His Sabres Of Paradise group’s three albums (also featuring heavily on the Warp label) focus more on Downtempo and Dub influences. Andrew also produced the Fuck Buttons’ second album Tarot Sport in 2009.

Remaining at the forefront of electronic music, the Bird Scarer label was launched last year, focusing on mid tempo synth heavy dancefloor tracks limited to 300 pressings. His krautrock-inspired collaborative project with studio engineer and established London producer Timothy J. Fairplay under the Asphodells name was released this year and Andrew has kept busy in the studio working on an impressive list of remixes over the past few years, including: Grinderman, Daniele Baldelli & DJ Rocca, Cut Copy, Soft Rocks, Wooden Shjips, Jagwar Ma, Locussolus and many, many more.

While Andrew has 19 albums under his belt, he modestly confesses to being an arranger rather than a producer, taking his 35 years of musical knowledge to be somewhat of an ideas man in the studio. These ideas first stemmed from a background in Post Punk and Rock and Roll, which as both a DJ and Producer he has kept with him throughout his House and Experimental electronic explorations. Known as an eclectic DJ, Weatherall has the ability and the collection to cover many styles from Rockabilly to Techno, recently showcasing his attachment to the avant-garde in a special back-to-back Boiler Room set with Ivan Smagghe. Though the two often play together, this occasion saw them trying to "out-weird" each other with an excellent result.

Don't miss this occasion to hear one of the true masters.

Support on the night from:
Tornado Wallace, Otologic, Angelo Cruzman & Phil K.
