Strap on your lederhosen Geelong - Oktoberfest is coming to town!

One of the world's oldest and most popular festival traditions will see Bavarian culture come to life at the Geelong Racecrouse on Saturday, October 10, 2015.

Oktoberfest Geelong will deliver an authentic Bavarian experience with food and drink, live music, events including best beard competitions, cow milking, barrel races, strongman and strongwoman championships and more.

In keeping with Oktoberfest tradition - and to ensure the event is as authentic as possible - six of the seven brands of beer that make up Oktoberfest will be imported direct from March for the festival.

The beers - from companies Hofbrau, Franziskaner, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Lowenbrau and Paulaner - must adhere to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1487, which states that beers can only include four ingredients - hops, barley malt, yeast and water.

As a director of the 'Big Group of Companies', City of Greater Geelong Mayor, Cr Darryn Lyons also welcomed the initiative bringing the biggest festival in the world to his hometown.

"We are proudly multicultural city and Oktoberfest Geelong is a fantastic addition to our existing cultural events program and I know Geelong will embrace it," he said.

"This is a fantastic new event for Geelong, filled with fun and tradition. We are thrilled that we have been able to secure Oktoberfest Geelong for a minimum of five years. So more over Munich!"
