Nowhere else in the world does cross-industry practice quite like Oz. A quintessentially Australian form of design practice, Australians are leading the world in this trend to look outside of the traditional “industry” box and search for creative alternatives both in practice and in business.
The design market is changing. Clients are expecting more and more from their designers, and the need to wear more than one professional hat is no longer an option, but a necessity.
Beyond what the market wants, our isolation down here in our pocket of the globe means that we have nowhere else to look to but each other, and therefore the Australian design industry needs to be (and is) the most eclectic in the world; driven by learning practices from every other creative industry we have access to (fashion, art, graphic design etc); a kind of ‘regional resourcefulness’ so to speak. And this is what truly differentiates the Australian design industry from the rest of the world.
This topic will explore these themes and more, digging for an answer to how cross-industry practice influences the business of Australian design in a global context.
