For the first time in its one hundred and forty year history The Convent and Catholic School of The Sacred Heart

will be opening its doors to the curious public, allowing access to its labyrinth of buildings and its abundance of history. Never before has the general public been allowed access to this iconic building still in original and untouched condition. Behind its eight foot high walls is a place of secrecy and seclusion, yet one bearing witness to the changes of time, both within its walls and within the general Ballarat community. Oh, what tales these walls can tell.

For something unseen lies within the walls of this haven of religious solitude. More than simply an historic building or the subject of urban myth, more than an abandoned place of worship, Sacred Heart has a story to tell. This ‘behind cloistered walls’ tour of the Sacred Heart Convent is a living history of the building, its witness to local history and an exploration of those who are left to walk the empty hallways alone.
