You can call him Freddie Kane OG, Gansta Gibbs, Freddie Gordie, or if you’re feeling ballsy you can even call him the Baby Face Killa.. but each and every one of those names belongs to the same man, the incomparable US rapper Freddie Gibbs. We are thrilled to announce he’s coming back to Perth to celebrate the release of his new album ‘Shadow Of A Doubt’, a fresh step-up on the ladder of his already impeccable discography.
Many rappers secretly wish they could be as uninhibited as Gibbs. Often referred to as the ‘last gangster rapper’, Gibbs was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, is an authentic product of the violent, drug-laden streets he grew up on, and has artfully and consistently told tales of ghetto life in these places, since his rap emergence in 2004.
Inspired by the harsh reality of the streets in which he called home, Gibbs harnessed his writing talents and quick wit and began to rap about the things he saw. Themes of drugs, prostitution, and gang-related violence saturate verses, pairing his raw lyrical picture with remarkable flow, humour and positivity.
Truly one of the worlds best living MCs, his five full length albums showcase Freddie as a true lyrical technician, perfecting several strains of contemporary hip-hop. An aggressively independent artist his countless mixtape and live shows have built Gibbs a passionate fanbase of general listeners, music critics, and fellow rappers over the years, by feeding them all a solid diet of sex, drugs, and murder.
Collaborations with Kaytranada, Young Thug, A$AP Ferg, Madlib and many many more position the rapper as an innovative Midwestern poet, proving the way for contemporary hip hop artists. His last record, produced entirely by Madlib, ‘ iñata' earned high praise from critics, spanning the best of the best rap blogs, and a Best New Music sticker on the critical behemoth Pitchfork.
