“Kathleen O’Connor’s Fremantle" 1878 to 1962

Celebrating the determination of creative women of the early 1900s

A panel discussion with prominent Western Australian writers, curators and artists at the Fremantle Library exploring Kathleen O'Connor's experiences within the social and artistic landscape of 1940's and 50's Fremantle.

Sharon Tassicker, Curator of the Janet Holmes à Court Collection will discuss how Kathleen O’Connor’s artwork fits into Australian and international art history. Simon Dawkins, a living nephew of Kathleen O’Connor, will reveal for the first time, an unfinished portrait of himself painted by his Aunt Kate. Kathleen O’Connor’s family members; Mike Lefroy and Joy Lefroy will also be in attendance.

Including; a display of artwork by Kathleen O’Connor, Jo Darvall and books written by O’Connor family members as well as books written about the dynamic lives of Kathleen O’Connor and C.Y. O’Connor.

Following the discussion panel, enjoy a historical & cultural walking tour through the West End led by O’Connor family members Mike and Joy Lefroy, local authors and historians. Weave your way through the streets of Fremantle past Kathleen O’Connor’s studio, listening to untold stories and discovering hidden historical locations along the way. The tour concludes at Merenda Contemporary Art Gallery in High Street for refreshments.

This project creates unique collaborations between local historians, writers and visual artists. It is an opportunity to celebrate and highlight the determination of women in the early 1900’s who forged on with brilliant careers that were little celebrated in their own lifetime.
