Event Description

Leeuwin Estate is delighted to present international superstar Welsh bass-baritone, Bryn Terfel CBE, soprano, Rachelle Durkin, with Special Guest, Lisa McCune and the Perth Symphony Orchestra in what promises to be a stunning alfresco vineyard performance featuring popular opera and stage musical classics.

Bryn Terfel’s remarkable voice and characteristic stage presence have made him one of music's hottest properties and earned him outstanding international acclaim. His ability to captivate and move his audience has left opera and concert promoters around the world clamouring to sign him. He has performed in all the great opera houses of the world and is acclaimed for his versatility as a concert performer, with highlights ranging from the opening ceremony of the Wales Millennium Centre, BBC Last Night of the Proms, and the Royal Variety Show to a gala concert with Andrea Bocelli in Central Park, New York. In 2003, Bryn was made a CBE for services to Opera in the Queen’s New Year Honours list and in 2006 was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music. Making his return to the Leeuwin stage after performing the 1999 Concert, Bryn Terfel said “I’m thrilled to be coming back to Leeuwin Estate for the concert in March.  I can’t believe it’s already 16 years since my last visit!  The setting, the wine, the food and of course the music are all fresh in my mind – not to mention the wonderful hospitality and audience at Leeuwin.  It promises to be the most fantastic evening.  I can’t wait!”

New York based Australian born Rachelle Durkin is one of opera’s most striking young artists, performing at major houses worldwide to critical acclaim. She is also a celebrated concert artist and interpreter of contemporary music and musical theatre with a wide range of repertoire spanning the baroque to modern masterpieces, including the role of Tytania in Baz Luhrmann’s groundbreaking production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Rachelle joined The Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2001 making her debut as the First Handmaiden in Sly with Placido Domingo and has appeared as a principal artist ever since. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in Handel’s Messiah and has performed as a soloist with all the major Australian symphony orchestras, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New Choral Society of Central Westchester, the Auckland Philharmonia and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Special Guest, Lisa McCune, a WAAPA graduate, is one of Australia’s most popular and successful screen and theatre performers, earning an impressive collection of awards, including four Gold Logies. Her leading lady performances in stage productions have firmly cemented her as one of Australia’s greatest musical theatre assets. Lisa most recently starred in the Opera Australia and Gordon Frost Organisation production of The King and I. Her performance as Anna Leonowens earned her a Helpmann Award nomination for Best Female Actor in a Musical. In 2014 the production was awarded three Helpmann Awards including Best Musical. Amongst her many roles, Lisa starred as Maria in the 1999 Gordon Frost production of The Sound of Music which she followed with her Green Room Award-winning performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret and in the Sydney and Melbourne seasons of Guys and Dolls (2009 Green Room nomination). Lisa recently starred on stage in Opera Australia’s South Pacific, with her performance as Nellie Forbush earning her a Sydney Theatre Award and Green Room Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. In 2013, she starred in Shane Warne The Musical at the 2013 Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

Perth Symphony Orchestra made their stunning Leeuwin debut in 2012, performing with Marina Prior, David Hobson and James Morrison, returning in 2014 for the 30th anniversary Leeuwin Concert with Diana Krall.
