Event Description
The Sydney University Dramatic Society presents Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera”.
Following the turbulent trajectory of the pillaging, plundering underground criminal Macheath and the repercussions of his unsavoury marriage to Polly Peachum, The Threepenny Opera is a seamy tale that is able to shock, provoke and please audiences in all the right places. Taking place in a world where the evil go unpunished and society at large gets a sound lashing, Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera’s cheerful cynicism turns conventional morality on its head (The Australian).
Centred on the ideologies of Wagner’s “gesamtkunstwerk”, Clemence Williams’ interpretation of this classic explores the relationship between the visual, aural and textual aesthetics to create a total work of art. The use of folk songs dispersed throughout various scenes emphasises the importance of art and its expressive capabilities in all walks of life.
With an orchestra comprised of some of the most talented musical minds from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The Threepenny Opera is not to be missed!
