Breaking Away - A Smiling for Smiddy Movie Night

 To qoute the mighty Velominati.....

It’s not a cycling film, not a fly on the wall doco like A Sunday In Hell or Hell On Wheels. In fact it’s completely bereft of hell in any form. To me it’s heaven, sometimes on wheels, sometimes in Mike’s Buick, sometimes in the swimming hole at the old abandoned limestone quarry.

An Academy Award winner (1979, Screenplay) Breaking Away cycles high on comedy as four friends come to terms with life after high school. When top-notch cyclist Dave (Dennis Christopher) learns that the world's bicycling champions are always Italian, he attempts to turn himself into an Italian, driving his parents (Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley) crazy. But everything changes after he meets the Italian racing team-an encounter that ultimately leads him and his friends (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley) to challenge the local college boys in the town's annual bike race.

The film was ranked eighth on the List of America's 100 Most Inspiring Movies compiled by the American Film Institute (AFI) in 2006. In June 2008, AFI announced its "Ten top Ten"—the best ten films in ten classic American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. Breaking Away ranked as the eighth best film in the sports genre

In early June 60 cyclists will hit the road on a 1800 kilometre cycling adventure over eight days to raise funds for cancer research. We'll ride their bikes from Adelaide to Uluru.

We do it to commemorate the life of physiotherapist, and keen triathlete, Adam Smiddy who passed away to an aggressive cancer aged only 26. Our team is aiming to raise $1,000,000 in 2016 to support Mater Foundation as major beneficiary.

All proceeds from this night will help us raise funds to support worldclass research into melanoma and prostate cancer and complementary therapies to improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
