The Damen Shipyards Group has been selected by the Commonwealth of Australia as a tenderer for the SEA1180 OPV Program.
Damen is an international shipyards group, employing more than 9,000 personnel, and operating 33 newbuild and repair yards globally. Damen also supplies a wide range of marine components to the maritime and defence industries using a combination of local and international supply chains. In addition to the 33 Damen-owned shipyards, Damen also specialises in partnering with local shipyards to build Damen vessels using the Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC) program. Under this program Damen has delivered over 500 vessels ranging from 16 meter tugboats to 110 meter OPV’s and Frigates.
Damen is fully committed to maximising the use of Australian industry if successful with our ambition to build the 12 steel-hulled Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Australian Navy. The development of a robust and sustainable Naval shipbuilding industry in Australia, with the aim to export to the global market into the future, is directly in line with Damen’s experience using the DTC program at numerous shipyards around the world. In accordance with Government strategy, as stated by Minister for Defence Industry, the Honourable Christopher Pyne, Damen seeks to build 2 OPVs in South Australia and the remaining 10 in Western Australia. As such, we would like to invite Australian companies active in the maritime and defence industries to join us in this national enterprise. As one of the three short-listed designers, and acting in our role as a Prime Contractor, Damen will assist suppliers via the provision of structured work packages. We will be pleased to hear from any Australian-based companies who have the capabilities to assist in the undertaking of any part of the project.
Tender submission will take place on 30th March 2017, with the contract due to be executed in December. Construction of the first ship is scheduled to start in mid-2018, with each successive ship due for commencement every 9 – 12 months following. We look forward to working with the Australian shipbuilding and defence industry and to playing our part in assisting in the development of Australia’s continuous Naval Shipbuilding program.
Please join Damen Shipyards and CCI for morning tea and to hear more about this project.
