Can art break barriers among cultures? Does the art speak a universal language everyone can understand or does its language have to be learnt? Are we capable of appreciating the art of another culture without knowing much of the context? Can cultural connections in art can be formed and developed?
In search for answers to these questions, we will look at two phenomena in art history: how Japanese influence transformed European art in the late 19th century, and how Aboriginal art in 20th century Australia emerged and developed as a unique blend of western and indigenous practices.
