Travel back 125 years to the day Perth Zoo first swung open its gates. These were the days when guinea pigs lived in castles while Royalty planted trees, chimpanzees ate at a table while people picnicked on the grass and Keepers had no uniforms and visitors wore top hats.
Deep diving into the archives reminds us that Perth Zoo has always evolved like the species we care for.
Nikki Beynon began working at Perth Zoo in 1999. In those two decades she has seen a lot of change to the organisation, the site, and the collection. In her capacity as Perth Zoo’s Interpretation Coordinator, she created the ‘Memory Lane’ exhibition to mark the Zoo’s 125th Birthday year. The hunt for old images and historical nuggets quickly became addictive and now it’s an obsession. Armed with her most treasured possession—a WA State Library Researcher pass—she regularly immerses in the past and gathers historical gems for the Zoo’s archives.
Cost $5.00. Book and pay online.
