The Joondalup Festival of Motoring will bring historic motor sport to the City. Join Motoring Historian Graeme Cocks as he talks about the rise of “around-the-houses” racing in Western Australia, and the world. The first event was conducted in Monaco in 1929 and the first in Australia was held in Albany WA in 1936. The barnstorming history of these races from 1936 to 1964 is told through period photography and rare film footage.

Profile: Graeme Cocks

Graeme Cocks is a motoring historian based in Western Australia. He is the author of six books, predominantly in the niche genre of motoring history. Twice shortlisted for Book of the Year at the International Historic Motoring Awards in London (2015 and 2016), he’s the only Australian writer to have achieved this honour. His book Red Dust Racers also won the Gold Medal in the Transportation category of the International Independent Publishers Awards in New York in May 2017. His book, Claude Deane Western Australia's Motor Dealer Extraordinaire was short-listed for the Royal Automobile Club of the United Kingdom’s Motoring Book of the Year Awards in 2020. It was also runner-up in the Royal WA Historical Society AE Williams Lee Steere 2020 Publication Prize. He has been the manager of two museums: the Fremantle Motor Museum and the York Motor Museum.
