The Roman Republic rejected the idea of rule by a single monarch, instead relying on a system of power-sharing checks and balances that provided inspiration for modern democracies. Yet as it expanded to become one of the greatest powers of the ancient world, increasing instability led to its demise and the rise of the Empire. Along the way it produced some of the most remarkable individuals and stories in history.
