Event Description

All HR/IR specialists and people managers are invited along to this insightful afternoon event.

We're pleased to secure renowned speaker Dr Skye Saunders, along with two of CCIWA's top experts in this field. Our speakers will share best practice insights and provide developments in managing sexual harassment in the workplace, and information on how to support employees given the new domestic violence provisions which took effect on 1 August.

The event will include the expert presentations below, plus a panel discussion and afternoon tea.

'Strike A Chord': A Framework for Transforming A Sexual Harassment Culture
Dr Skye Saunders
Based on her research of rural workplaces across Australia, Skye will speak to her 'Strike A Chord' framework for achieving lasting and meaningful unity by empowering three key groups: men, women and employers. Underpinning 'Strike A Chord' is a philosophy of encouragement, empathy and tapping into the inherent strengths of each individual in the workplace to play their unique role in effecting cultural change.

Dr Saunders is an Associate Professor in Law at the Australian National University and Vice President of the YWCA Canberra. Formerly an Employment Relations/Discrimination solicitor, Skye is author of Whispers from the Bush - the Workplace Sexual Harassment of Australian Rural Women. She is currently researching for her new book project, Defying Gravity - Rising Above Sex Discrimination in the Workplace. In 2017, Skye was awarded the University of Canberra Chancellor's Distinguished Young Alumni Award.

Domestic Violence Awareness - New Framework and Best Practice Options
Stephen Farrell - Senior Employee Relations Consultant, CCIWA
In August this year, the standard Family and Domestic Violence Leave provisions were inserted into the modern awards. A Bill has also been introduced into parliament to extend the entitlement to award free employees. In the context of the new framework, we consider what employers must, can and are currently doing to support their employees in this space.

This session will cover:

  • Who the new provisions apply to

  • The key elements of the standard award term

  • Interpretation matters

  • An update on the bill to introduce the entitlement for award free employees

  • What best practise organisations are implementing at the minute

Management of Sexual Harassment Claims
Erin Bethel, Principal Consultant, Workplace Consulting, CCIWA
In an era where the line between work and private life is becoming increasingly blurred, particularly with the growth in technology, and one in three workers in Australia are sexually harassed in the workplace, Erin will discuss when out of hours conduct has a connection to the workplace.  Erin will also discuss how to manage and investigate sexual harassment complaints effectively.
