Showcasing wines from the 2014 Vintage from the Grands Crus Classes of the Medoc, and their equivalents from the Right Bank and Graves (including Sauternes). As is customary, the vintage to be tasted is five years prior to the year of the event: 2014.
While the 2014 vintage was not a vintage without challenges for Bordeaux, it is arguably the finest vintage since the notable back-to-back vintages of 2009 and 2010. Growers saw the vintage start well with moderate temperatures and good rain in the winter months (2014 was one of the wettest winters in 50 years), leading to early bud-burst in mid-March. Early Spring brought warm, sunny and dry weather followed by a wetter May and culminating in rapid flowering. June saw hot weather, progressing towards a good quality vintage for many, although some vineyards experienced humidity and mildew pressure. Extensive crop thinning, where practiced, led to improved conditions. July came in cooler and wetter with some hail, moving into a cool and somewhat damp August. Fortunately, September saw a return to warm and sunny weather with good harvest conditions continuing through October. In general, the 2014 vintage brought higher yields than in 2013, and produced mostly medium-bodied/mid-weight wines with silky tannins, moderate alcohol and good acidity.
