Grudge Events presents THE MONEY WAR

Grudge Events is back to Rollercoaster for its third instalment, this time with THE MONEY WAR!

Supported by WINTER CORNER and INDYSIN

PRESENTED BY AFENDS CLOTHING

The Money War was conceived during an American road trip when Dylan Ollivierre (Rainy Day Women) and Carmen Pepper (Warning Birds) were working out what to do following the breakup of their respective bands. It was during this highly creative period that a new project organically emerged. “During a writing burst in the US where I wrote 5 songs in a day” reflects Dylan “we ended up recording over 20 iPhone demos.

In LA and San Francisco they spent time with Arne Franger (Prince, Paul McCartney) and Tom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Fruit Bats) who convinced them of the value of the new songs. "Give it time is fucking gorgeous - a seriously killer song" - Thom Monahan

Dylan started writing songs when he was 13 and soon began to figure out the recording process. “I got a 4 track cassette tape machine for my 16th Birthday and have been dabbling in production since then”. He also had a unique experience via a family connection -  Dylan Olliverre’s father is from Bequia, in the Caribbean, where he worked as a shipwright – He was building Bob Dylan’s boat ‘Water Pearl’. “I got to meet Bob Dylan a few times as he was a friend of my parents. I played guitar with him and talked a little about song writing. I wish I could have the conversation now because I would appreciate it so much more. The interesting thing he said about guitar playing is that ‘it’s all about the right (rhythm) hand’.

Carmen began playing guitar when she was 12 and played her first gig at the age of 14. It was when she was playing with Warning Birds that she first met Dylan. “Warning Birds shared the stage with Rainy Day Women on several occasions and I always admired Dylan's song writing” explains Carmen.

In 2016 The Money War were named Triple J unearthed winner to play at the Southbound festival. “Inside the Badlands Bar, the Money War were a revelation live”. Simon Collins The West Australian

Their debut single ‘Give it Time’ picked up radio plays and great reviews in Australia, US and Europe, followed by ‘Recall’ which has received heavy rotation on Triple J and is picking up airplay on radio stations in the US including NRP. “Just a near-perfect pop hit” – Nick Findlay JJJ.

Dylan Olliverre talks about the songs on the EP:

“Give it time” features Carmen’s ethereal vocals against a hook heavy wall of sound. My old band had broken up; I was able to do whatever I wanted. The song is about realising that it's ok to float by sometimes”

“Recall” was written during a writing burst in the US where I wrote 5 songs in a day.

It’s about being tired of repetition. I wanted the sound to be dramatic and move through different moods’.

“In the dark” was the very first song we did together and was a live take for a demo. It captured something special and we decided to roll with it. It’s super sparse and vulnerable.

“Stars” was inspired by a walk along Hollywood boulevard and seeing the disparity in lifestyles between the famous and the homeless that all walked the same street. We also met so many people that had moved to LA with hopes to crack it in the entertainment industry but ended up working shitty jobs for years”.

“Real life” refers to the pressure in our world to have a 'real life'- get a job, get married, have kids, settle down etc. For most artistic people, that kind of life can't really coexist. Even if it was financially feasible, I wouldn't choose that kind of life anyway.

“Calm me down” is about being completely disillusioned with the world. I was kind of imagining a post-war apocalyptic setting when I was writing it but its more about feeling completely disconnected emotionally”.
