Event Description

Michael Pignéguy is a Western Australian percussionist, composer and WAAPA graduate who, from 2006 spent a decade living and playing music in the Middle East where he first formed The Awakenings Ensemble. Immersed in Middle Eastern and jazz influences, Pignéguy's ensemble, which at that time toured in Asia, Africa the US, has now evolved in an Australian setting.

Our next Hemispheres concert (Saturday September 4) teams up Michael Pignéguy with Hemispheres founder and multi-reedman, Mark Cain to present the latest incarnation of The Awakenings Ensemble drawing on both Middle Eastern, jazz and Afro-Latin influences. The pair have been keen to perform together for some time and this concert allows them to bring together a range of musicians of different backgrounds on the same stage with current members of the ensemble. The complete lineup of this exciting octet includes: Michael Edelby (oud), Esfandiar Shahmir (Persian ney and daf), Steve Richter (percussion), Jeremy Greig (trombone), Brodie Stewart (keyboards), Pete Jeavons (basses), Mark Cain (reeds and ethnic winds) and Michael Pignéguy (drums and percussion).

This is a concert not to be missed. Join us to hear these leading jazz and world musicians taking us on a journey beyond hemispheres.
