HOOCH PRESENTS
Mosquito Coast
At just 14-years-of-age, singer and guitarist, Naomi Robinson put flyers around her neighbourhood in Perth looking for band mates, which led her to meet drummer Conor Barton from a nearby school. Naming themselves after a Harrison Ford film and taking musical influence from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they’ve now been jamming together for three years in Naomi’s basement, making sun-bleached, guitar-driven pop as Mosquito Coast.
In 2015, Naomi and Conor took a trip to Sydney to record the single ‘Call My Name’ at REC Studios with producer Carl Fox. It was the first song they had ever recorded and they entered into the Triple J Unearthed High competition. From a pool of more than 850 artists and 1200 songs, Triple J whittled the search for Australia’s best High School music act down to just one - Mosquito Coast.
“There's so much to love about this. So unselfconsciously cool.”
Richard Kingsmill, Triple J
“With the kind of instantly accessible, Best Coast-like sound they have on the track...there’s no question that the potential for this duo is big.” Hillydilly
“Naomi's vocal reminds me of a young, chilled out Karen O. Ultra cruisey slacker rock. Love it.” Gen Fricker, Triple J
Following their big win, Naomi and Conor travelled to Triple J studios to record a new song with ARIA winning producer, Greg Wales. The result was ‘Commotion’ - a kaleidoscopic groove made for sunshine and open minds that’s brimming with jammy, psychedelic goodness.
Keep your ears tuned into Mosquito Coast in 2016 with plenty more to come, including a whole bunch of live shows around the country.
