Managing Perth’s congestion: What’s changing on our roads
Perth’s road congestion is painful for drivers and also expensive – the cost to business is estimated at $2 billion dollars per annum. But it could also generate a major windfall for WA’s transport supply chain as the city’s population rapidly expands. The recently released Perth Transport Plan for ‘3.5m people and beyond’ maps out the Government’s options to cope with an extra 1.4 million people in the city by 2050.
Building more railways will help ease the burden but roads will continue to play a major role in Perth’s transport system. Contractors will be needed to build more highways and freeway connections, while industry will also be called on to provide transport innovations, making it easier and safer to use existing roads. Already there are plans for new technology to manage traffic flow and provide drivers with real-time information on travel times, average speeds and road conditions.
The State Government is also taking expertise and learning from Transport for London and preparations for the London 2012 Olympics in their approach to addressing Perth’s congestion challenge.
Join us for breakfast and to hear from the Hon. Dean Nalder MLA, Minister for Transport and James Dobinson, Congestion Program Director, Main Roads WA as they discuss a number of key projects that form an integral part of managing Perth’s congestion.
