If your child is Kindy or Pre-Primary this year, Joondalup Libraries would like to invite you to a free workshop on how children learn to read. The workshop will give parents insight into what children need to know to read a word, and how to supplement their learning at home through a new library resource – the Reading Ready Pack. At the end of the workshop, participants can borrow the Pack which has been created in consultation with literacy experts from the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation.
The workshop will cover:
- Information on the phonological awareness and phonic skills children need as they learn to read.
- Guidance on how help your child decode and sound out the words in their reading books.
- Activities and games you can play with your child to develop their phonological awareness and phonics skills
- Advice on choosing appropriate books for your child to practice with
- A tour of the collection of Beginner Reader books available
- An introduction to the Reading Ready Pack – a new loanable resource that will reinforce all the skills learnt in the workshop.
This Project has been supported by funding provided by the State Government of Western Australia, through the State Library’s Better Beginnings program.
No cost. Book online.
