Event Description

Hot on the heels of the release of the Western Australian State Government's Asian Engagement Strategy, the Minister for Asian Engagement, the Hon. Peter Tinley AM MLA, will detail how the State Government plans to support local businesses to step up their efforts in Asia.

To bring the opportunities to life, we will also host a panel of small and medium-sized exporters to discuss how they're navigating the current trade and political climate to seize opportunities in the region.

Hear first-hand how a host of WA businesses are already capitalising on Australia's free trade agreements with key Asian markets, as well as how and where they utilise alternative market entry channels such as e-commerce.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear more about:

  • Where and what the immediate and future opportunities are in Asia;

  • How to access Government funding to scope trade and investment opportunities;

  • How to build business networks and knowledge of Asian market trends;

  • Developing your Asia-literacy to support stronger, long-term relationships;

  • How to utilise CCIWA's International Trade and Investment Centre to establish or grow your global business.

Keynote Speaker: The Hon. Peter Tinley AM MLA, Minister for Housing; Veterans Issues; Youth; Asian Engagement
Minister Tinley enlisted in the Army as a soldier in 1980, and in 1990 graduated first in class and Queen's Medallist from the Royal Military College Duntroon. He served 17 of his 25 years in the Army with the Special Air Service Regiment. Peter's service was recognised with his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

On his departure from the SAS, Peter developed a boutique consultation business in leadership and team building servicing a niche demand in corporate Australia. In February 2009 he established an investment management business with the mandate to acquire and develop assets in the North West and Kimberley regions of Western Australia for the provision of accommodation and services to the tourism and resource sectors.

In 2009 Peter stepped down from his business interests to re-enter public service as a member of the Western Australian Parliament, following a successful by-election campaign and was sworn in as the Member for Willagee on the 10 February 2010. During 2012, Peter was WA Labor's Shadow Minister for Planning, Housing, and Local Jobs, and in 2015 was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Asian Engagement, Trade, Science and Lands.

Panellist: Kevin Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Perth Airport
Mr Brown commenced in the role of Chief Executive Officer of Perth Airport, the operator of Perth Airport, in July 2016. He has been involved in operational and commercial roles in both hub and regional airports for more than 15 years in the UK and Australia.

Prior to joining Perth Airport, Mr Brown held the position of Chief Executive Officer of North Queensland Airports, which operate Cairns and Mackay Airports, where he was responsible for implementing a growth strategy for both airports. He also spent nine years with the British Airport Authority (BAA) and was Managing Director at Edinburgh International Airport.

In 2017, Mr Brown was appointed to the Tourism Western Australia Board and is also a Council Member for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia and Freight and Logistics Council of WA.

Panellist: David Masel, Managing Director, Gelflex
David Masel has been Managing Director of Gelflex since 2006. During this time the company has grown from a small specialist contact lens manufacturer, selling predominately in Australia to a global company selling speciality and disposable lenses to over 35 countries.

Gelflex is Australia's only manufacturer of disposable contact lenses. The company has three manufacturing sites with offices in Perth, Melbourne, Indonesia, Italy and the USA. David has extensive experience working within the Asian region as both a manufacturer and distributor.

Panellist: Trevor Dickinson, Owner, Dickinson Estate Wineries
Trevor and Mary Dickinson went from a 20-year life at sea with the Australian Navy to becoming farmers at Boyup Brook in the Blackwood Valley in 1987. In 1994 they planted their vineyard, initially selling fruit to Goundrey Wine until the GFC. With the loss of the market for fruit, they decided to produce their own wines in 2009 - establishing Dickinson Estate. They have proven to be very successful and now have four different labels.

In 2014 Trevor and Mary submitted four wines in 16 categories in the Hong Kong Wine Show. They won 16 medals including two gold and the trophy for the Best Wine with Chinese Dim Sum. They again entered their wines in 2015 with a similar result, and have now had 61 entries for 59 medals and two trophies over the past five years.
