"All that glitters is not gold/Often have you heard that told”
Bassanio goes to his best friend for a loan to finance his wooing of the beautiful Portia, an heiress worth her weight in gold. With all his capital tied up in sea trade, Antonio contracts himself to the usurer and Jew, Shylock, for three thousand ducats or a pound of flesh, due in three months. As Antonio's ships sink, Bassanio woos his lady, and Shylock is tested to her limits, the powers of love and money and the unending cycles of finance and violence will be interrogated in this production of one of Shakespeare's most confronting plays.
