Join us for informal drinks, networking and the opportunity to hear from Nigel Stewart, Managing Director SEA 5000, BAE Systems.


With over 3,500 staff across the nation, BAE Systems is Australia’s largest defence industry company, with a proven track record of growing Australian Industry Capability as a trusted partner to a local supply chain of over 1,600 Australian companies.


For over 60 years BAE Systems has built and sustained complex naval platforms including Naval Frigates, Landing Helicopter Dock ships, patrol boats and minor war vessels for the Royal Australian Navy in shipyards around the country.


In August 2017, the company submitted its bid to design and build nine Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates for the Australian Navy for the nation’s SEA 5000 Future Frigate program.


BAE Systems is offering the Global Combat Ship-Australia, a variant of its Type 26 Global Combat Ship which commenced manufacture for the UK’s Royal Navy in July 2017.


If successful, BAE Systems will give Australian businesses access to Batch 2 of the UK Type 26 program, as well as full access to its annual global supply expenditure of over $18bn.


By maximising opportunities for Australian industry at home and abroad, BAE Systems will create a sustainable shipbuilding industry that is both enduring and world class.


About Nigel:


Nigel was born in 1964 and studied Mechanical Engineering at Birmingham University, where he was sponsored by Land Rover Ltd. He then worked with both RTZ and Hunting Aviation in their support and commercial functions before joining Marconi in 1996 as Commercial Director of their Land and Naval Systems business.
In 2000, Nigel became Commercial and Procurement Director within BAE Systems Type 45 programme, to deliver six new anti air warfare destroyers for the Royal Navy, signing contracts in excess of £2bn. He then went on to lead the BAE Systems bid team to win a £5bn design and build contract for two new aircraft carriers for the UK Royal Navy and to manage the team in the early phase of the programme.
In 2006, Nigel became Commercial Director for the BAE Systems Surface Ship building business where he was responsible for putting together a 15 year partnering agreement with the MoD for build and support of all new Royal Navy Ships and helping to create BVT Surface Fleet, a joint venture between VT and BAE Systems. On formation of BVT, Nigel was appointed as its Commercial Director. BVT subsequently became wholly owned by BAE Systems.
In 2011, Nigel became Commercial and Business Development Director for BAE Systems Naval Ships Division.
Nigel’s role is Business Development and Strategy Director for BAE Systems Maritime which covers all aspects of the £2.5bn pa UK Maritime business including Naval Ships, Submarines and Services.
In addition, from January 2017 Nigel has been responsible for the BAE Systems SEA 5000 campaign and has been appointed Managing Director SEA 5000.
